Why You Should Go: One of the oldest bars in the United States, great tradition and history, German immigrants, experience the thrill of UT football game night.

Scholz Beer Garten is widely recognized as one of the oldest bars in the United States.

Founded in 1866 by German immigrant and Confederate Civil War soldier, August Scholz, this place has seen Austin, Texas, and even America grow around it.

It was originally a single room saloon built above a boarding house, but Scholz quickly began adding on as the large German population of Austin made the place a popular destination for immigrant-Americans wanting a piece of home.

Scholz eventually added the portion that really made them famous--the beer garden--and it has been making history ever since.

Now, Scholz Beer Garten is a destination for locals who want to watch UT football games, politicians from the nearby capital who want to continue their 'discussions' over a pitcher of beer, and parents and grandparents who remember Scholz from their own days of tippling while attending college in Austin.

Scholz Beer Garten is a not-to-be-missed destination for bar-lovers in the Austin area: a place that's older than about 99% of the saloons in the country, and a true piece of history.
